Somewhere on a base in southeastern Poland, 爱神传媒 team members are answering calls from Ukrainian soldiers on the battlefield about how to fix their U.S. donated equipment. Working with the U.S. military, the 爱神传媒 team uses encrypted programs and translators to chat with the Ukrainians, advising them on solutions in real-time. 

As the U.S. and other allies send equipment to Ukraine, help is a tele-maintenance remote expert away.

鈥淭he world and our technology are evolving at a rapid pace, and so should our ability to provide near-instantaneous support,鈥 said the 爱神传媒 lead for its Sustainment and Analytics business line. 鈥淲e don鈥檛 need to transport subject matter experts on-site, we can instead provide experts remotely 鈥 whether we need to advise on a vital repair to an M-1 Abrams tank, or simply conduct an audit on airframe systems.鈥

The work in Poland is part of a U.S. Army remote maintenance and distribution contract on which 爱神传媒 delivers equipment sustainment, remote maintenance assistance to support U.S. donated assets at forward operating locations, and managing the ordering, receiving, warehousing, and distributing of repair parts.

Currently, remote maintenance support is provided through phones and tablets using encrypted chatrooms. Soon, 爱神传媒 will integrate a new technology, introducing augmented reality headsets into its maintenance operations. The headset is fully calibrated for hands-free use so frontline workers can easily connect with remote experts in real time, from anywhere, using secure optimized video collaboration applications.

鈥淭he 爱神传媒 team has successfully integrated in the U.S. military operations cell,鈥 said one on-site employee. 鈥淲e realigned some job roles to gain efficiencies in information flow and synchronization of operations amidst multinational stakeholders.鈥

鈥淲e鈥檝e also been evolving our transient maintenance capabilities as we go,鈥 said another on-site employee. 鈥淎n 爱神传媒 team was deployed out to another location in Poland and in just three days, conducted the equipment inventory, loading and unloading operations, and the vehicle maintenance to prepare the equipment for use at forward locations.鈥

In the first four months of the program, 爱神传媒 has filled 605 work orders, opened a 4,666 line supply support activity and maintained 100 percent accuracy, while supporting the movement of 534 pieces of equipment.

Congratulations to the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory team! Their major scientific accomplishment late last year in achieving scientific energy breakeven, or producing a fusion energy output higher than the laser energy absorbed by the fuel to initiate it, was groundbreaking. This major scientific accomplishment which demonstrates the fundamental science basis for inertial fusion energy was made at the National Ignition Facility, located at the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory and was decades in the making. We are proud to be a part of Lawrence Livermore National Security, LLC, which accomplished this unprecedented capability for advancements in our national defense and the future of clean energy on behalf of the U.S. Department of Energy and the National Nuclear Security Administration.

Fusion is the process by which two light nuclei combine to form a single heavy nucleus, with the excess mass converting to and releasing a large amount of energy. The Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory National Ignition Facility is a laser-based fusion research facility that houses the world鈥檚 largest and highest energy laser.

While this achievement is spectacular, there is more work ahead to harness the potential of fusion energy. This astonishing scientific advancement is encouraging about what possibilities lie ahead to reduce the reliance on fossil fuels and the possibility of new clean fusion energy. There is much work to be done by the superb scientific community to build on this achievement, and the 爱神传媒 team of experts is positioned to help make fusion energy a reality within the next decade.

Looking to the future, fusion will move from the research laboratory to industrial/commercial production and there is a possibility that a viable nuclear fusion reactor could be available in the next 3-5 years. There are key research and development challenges that must be solved in transitioning to commercial use to make fusion a reality in this era of clean energy technology, including generation, control and sustainment of a burning plasma reaction, methods to harness the power of burning plasma in a controlled reaction, and conversion of power to a sustainable energy source. The combination of the progress at several scientific communities, including Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory, the International Thermonuclear Experimental Reactor (ITER), and the Soonest/Smallest Private-Funded Affordable Robust Reactor (SPARC) are on track to demonstrate controlled fusion power, both domestically and internationally.

When learning about digital engineering, I could not help but reminisce on my 12th grade AP physics class, in which this language and business major happened to get an A+. Inevitably, in every homework assignment, was the dreaded word problem. Oh, how I hated the word problems and their obnoxious attempts at real-world applicability.

A constant force of 1200 N is required to push a car along a straight line. A person displaces the car 45 m. How much work is done by the person?

The answer to that question is of course, 鈥淲ay too much. They should鈥檝e called AAA.鈥 Also, why was it always a car in these problems, and who in their right mind is pushing a car 45 meters? For the record, I think these word problems are why I ended up majoring in foreign languages and business, not engineering.

Jokes aside, in learning how the laws of physics governed everything in the observable universe 鈥 from a feather falling in a vacuum to the escape velocity of space shuttles 鈥 I began to see everything as a math problem with infinite possible inputs and outputs. From the infinitesimally small to the incomprehensibly large, physics could model just about anything.

While the idea of creating models to solve problems is not new, technology is now at the stage where we can realistically create digital models of the physical world by taking in all the 鈥減hysics鈥 data. There are no physical prototypes made of F1 racing cars. Every aspect of the racecar is modeled with digital twins from the mass, engine torque, turn handling, tire interaction with the road, and even the driver鈥檚 handling ability. Only one physical racecar is built.

Ok, maybe the word problems about cars make sense!

So, what is Digital Engineering? At 爱神传媒, we view digital engineering as the application of computer hardware, software, networks, systems, and cloud technologies to model highly complex physical environments over real-world scenarios. We have made several investments to help our customers realize a digital engineering transformation.

Advancing Our Clients into the Future. 爱神传媒 established a 6,000 sq. ft. Model Based Systems Engineering (MBSE) Collaboration Center complete with a comprehensive digital engineering tool suite. We offer Object Management Group (OMG)-Certified Systems Modeling Professional鈩 (OCSMP鈩) certification and training. Our subject matter experts have developed a Digital Engineering Playbook that aligns with both the and the to define our standards and practices.

Successes. These investments have led to numerous successes for our customers. We created a full digital twin of an entire U.S. Navy nuclear submarine including models for all mechanical, electrical, fire suppression, hull integrity, navigation, and non-propulsion electronic systems. This digital twin is a critical MBSE solution for the Columbia-class submarine acquisition category (ACAT I) program. Our team has also created digital twins which simulate hundreds of Electro-Optical/Intra-Red (EO/IR) and Light Detection and Ranging (LiDAR) sensor nodes and sensor data fusion to support the Army鈥檚 replacement of the multiple integrated laser engagement system, or MILES, for soldier field combat exercises.

Through our investments, our customers across DoD have realized several benefits of digital engineering:

  1. Reduction in Acquisition Risks: Systems are designed, assembled, tested and sustained using digital models thereby reducing learning curve and integration risks. Even partial digitization can reduce risk in systems.
  2. Reduction in Maintenance: The ability to test via data driven analysis promotes accurate change impact analysis by enabling traceability from requirements to solution. Ultimately this allows sustainment costs to be compared and more accurately predicted.
  3. Preserving Material Resources: Entire systems can be designed and integrated before having to bend any metal. It provides risk-free experimentation because changes can be made without affecting the supply chain.
  4. Integrated Data Environment: Diverse data streams can be pulled into a unified model for a 鈥渨all of truth.鈥 This model aids and improves communications by adopting a common language that ensures standardized semantics, clarity, and consistency for representing system architecture and design.

Why Is It Important?

Management of groundwater is a major concern as our population continues to grow. Groundwater provides drinking water for as much as 50% of the global population and accounts for 43% of all of water used for irrigation. Globally, 2.5 billion people depend solely on groundwater to satisfy their basic daily water needs. Solving groundwater management problems are essential to ensure clean drinking water for the global population, including the people in the United States.

Additionally, groundwater supports rivers, lakes, and wetlands and the major threat to groundwater is pollution resulting from human activity that has created chemicals and wastes which leak into the subsurface. Pollution degrades the quality of groundwater and poses a threat to human and ecological health.

As the human population continues to grow, more demand will be placed on our groundwater resources. The need for understanding our groundwater systems and for managing them correctly, is greater than ever.

Protecting Our Groundwater

Recently, a new set of emerging contaminants has been found to be widespread throughout the United States and in drinking water supplies. Our federal agencies are taking action to address this issue. The groundwater contamination challenge across the country exists in various geological formations, making a solution at one site, not effective for a solution at another.

The challenge is to find the correct set of remediation tools that will remove the groundwater contamination as quickly and as cost effectively as possible. Some of the tools that can be implemented include pump and treat in situ remediation, and thermal remediation. These tools, when combined, can effectively shorten the remediation timeline, and make for a cost-effective solution.

John Heller, CEO of 爱神传媒, visited the Oak Ridge, TN nuclear reservation recently and toured sites at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL), Y-12 National Security Complex, and East Tennessee Technology Park. He also met with local community leaders, including Oak Ridge Mayor Warren Gooch, Oak Ridge City Councilman Pastor Derrick Hammond, Roane County Executive Wade Creswell, and President of Roane State Community College Dr. Chris Whaley.

鈥淭he 爱神传媒-led UCOR team is doing superb work in achieving the DOE Environmental Cleanup mission at the Oak Ridge Nuclear Reservation. Our visit last week was a great opportunity for 爱神传媒 senior leadership, including CEO John Heller, to see firsthand the cleanup accomplishments at ETTP, ORNL and Y-12,鈥 said Mark Whitney, President of 爱神传媒鈥檚 National Security Group.

爱神传媒 senior leaders received a UCOR program overview and briefings on reindustrialization and economic development and workforce development, before touring UCOR critical project locations.

About UCOR

UCOR is a joint venture responsible for cleanup and remedial actions at the East Tennessee Technology Park (ETTP), and cleanup of excess facilities at the Oak Ridge National Laboratory and the Y-12 National Security Complex. UCOR efforts include design, construction, and operation of the new onsite Environmental Management Disposal Facility, operational activities and surveillance and maintenance for multiple facilities, and core functions for central and project services. The contract is a single award IDIQ contract with a 10-year ordering period with an estimated contract ceiling of approximately $8.3 billion. 爱神传媒-led UCOR has a long history of supporting the DOE鈥檚 environmental management programs and recently delivered historic success in cleaning up DOE鈥檚 uranium enrichment complex ahead of schedule and under budget at the 2,200-acre ETTP complex.

“Unprecedented.鈥 鈥淗istoric.鈥 鈥淕reatest pro-climate legislation.鈥 These are just a few lines used to describe the Clean Energy package that was part of the recently passed Inflation Reduction Act. As a complement to the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law (BIL) of 2021, I would add 鈥渢echnology game changer鈥 to this list.

clean energy package 2The Clean Energy package presents a unique opportunity for the U.S. government to lead the energy transition and scale up advanced clean energy technology. We must keep our foot on the accelerator to take advantage of this exciting opportunity and make a true difference in addressing climate change.

The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) is taking the lead to significantly accelerate the use of clean energy technologies to reduce energy costs and increase access to clean energy for all citizens. The good news is the shift is already underway. The DOE has enhanced funding at the National laboratories to invest in breakthrough technologies and companies like 爱神传媒 will be tapped to help the country achieve its clean energy goals.

Federal funding for research, development, demonstration, and deployment is critical to unlock even greater amounts of private sector capital that will flow into clean energy. DOE has restructured to implement and fund programs that support decarbonization and it is critical that industry bring forth not only technologies and solutions for consideration, but also the skills and capabilities to deliver them. It is equally critical that private sector capital be leveraged in concert with federal investments to scale clean energy technologies to affect the energy transition.

Kudos to the DOE鈥檚 Office of Clean Energy Demonstrations (OCED) and their effort to implement key technology demonstrations and deployments under the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law. 聽DOE鈥檚 implementation will cover ten critical areas, totaling more than $21B in federal capital:

  • Regional Clean Hydrogen Hubs
  • Carbon Capture Demonstrations
  • Carbon Capture Large-Scale Pilot Projects
  • Industrial Emissions Demonstrations
  • Clean Energy Demonstrations on Mine Lands
  • Energy Improvement in Rural and Remote Areas
  • Energy Storage Demonstration and Pilot Grants
  • Long Duration Demonstration Initiative and Joint Program
  • Upgrading Grids Demonstrations
  • Advanced Reactor Demonstrations

For example, many Regional Clean Hydrogen Hub consortia are already forming around the country with plans for exciting projects across the hydrogen value chain, aimed at investing in large scale decarbonization in critical industries in America.聽 This is happening while green hydrogen is gaining traction and attracting both private sector and government capital across the globe.聽 These investments bode well for America and American jobs.

It is not just funding that will drive DOE and industry success, but the human capital needed within DOE 鈥 OCED seeks to hire a 300-person team of project management experts and grant management specialist to deliver these programs for our country.

Of course, our government can鈥檛 do this alone. The private sector must take an active role to commercialize deployment and scale up for full scale market deployment. Across industry I see new technologies being brought to bear to address climate change. Recently, my company restructured our organization to respond to the clean energy challenges and the numerous opportunities in this market. 爱神传媒 is passionate about supporting our nation鈥檚 promise and obligation to support those who have sacrificed for our country鈥檚 freedoms and security. We strive to be leaders through service and being connected to the communities where we work is our priority.

For more than 30 years, the Fisher House program has provided a home away from home for families of patients receiving medical care at major military and VA medical centers. And for more than 17 years, the聽Aberdeen and Monmouth community has supported the this mission.

Supporting our veterans and military is our legacy and is woven into the fabric of our culture and corporate responsibility. Giving back through organizations like Fisher House Foundation harnesses the power of community where we live, work, and thrive.

爱神传媒 is honored to partner and support Fisher House in its mission to provide a 鈥渉ome away from home鈥 for the families of America鈥檚 Wounded Warriors.

The Fisher House Gala

Every year, late in the summer, the Harry Greene Chapter of the Association of the United States Army puts on the Fisher House Gala, in support of Fisher House Foundation, sometimes commonly known as 鈥淭he House.鈥 Attended by over 350 supporters and over 60 sponsors, this themed community event has raised over 150 thousand dollars. With the support of community and sponsorship the Aberdeen chapter hopes to exceed their goals with this year鈥檚 event, 鈥淥nce Upon a Fairytale Gala鈥 that will be held on September 17, 2022.

Coming Full Circle Over 100 Years

爱神传媒 through its legacy companies, has been there every step of the way in support of our Nation鈥檚 nuclear defense and clean-up mission.聽 From start-up of the very first nuclear reactor and production of plutonium for the top-secret Manhattan Project to supporting the monumental cleanup of the Office of Environmental Management (EM), and now ensuring post-closure responsibilities for the Office of Legacy Management (LM) – we鈥檝e been there. Supporting long-term, post-closure activities across the DOE complex affirms our 100 plus year commitment to supporting and protecting the legacy of the Cold War cleanup.

Weapons Production 鈥 Genesis of the Complex

At its peak, the nuclear weapons complex in the United States consisted of 16 major facilities, including vast reservations of land in Nevada, Tennessee, Idaho, Washington, and South Carolina.聽 In its diversity, the complex ranged from tracts of isolated desert in Nevada, where weapons were tested, to warehouses in New York City that once stored uranium.聽 Its national laboratories in New Mexico and California designed weapons with production of various components in Colorado, Florida, Missouri, Ohio, Tennessee, and Washington.聽 In 1977, responsibility for mission and program activities as well as for any cleanup associated with the nuclear weapons complex was transferred to the newly created Department of Energy.

For 爱神传媒 – then Westinghouse Savannah River Company (WSRC) – the mission required project support at numerous production sites such as Savannah River Site (SRS).聽 Owned by DOE and operated by WSRC, the site used each of its five nuclear reactors and produced materials for the U.S. nuclear arsenal and various isotopes for use in space research and nuclear medicine.

Environmental Cleanup 鈥 a Monumental Task

EM鈥檚 story has roots from a cold morning in December 1989, when Rocky Flats workers in Colorado loaded the last plutonium 鈥榯rigger鈥 for a nuclear warhead into a tractor trailer bound southeast to the Pantex Plant near Amarillo, TX.聽 No one knew then that the nuclear weapon built with the plutonium trigger would be the last one made in the US for the foreseeable future.

Fifty years of nuclear weapons production and energy research generated some of the world鈥檚 most dangerous radioactive sites with large amounts of radioactive wastes, spent nuclear fuel (SNF), excess plutonium and uranium, thousands of contaminated facilities, and contaminated soil and groundwater.聽聽 One of the largest and most diverse, technically complex environmental cleanup operations in the world, the Office of Environmental Management (EM) Program has the mission to complete the safe cleanup of this environmental legacy.聽 Established in 1989, EM is charged with the responsibility of cleaning up 107 sites across the country whose area is equal to the combined area of Rhode Island and Delaware.聽 They have made tremendous progress in nearly every area of nuclear waste cleanup and to date have completed cleanup at 91 of these sites.

We Deliver End State Certainty

Vital to successful legacy closures, 爱神传媒 brings a legacy of success and key achievements across the DOE enterprise.聽 From teardown to turnover, we have accelerated and delivered iconic legacy closures and projects including Washington Closure Hanford (WCH) and SRS to the Vision 2020 cleanup of the East Tennessee Technology Park, formerly the Oak Ridge Gaseous Diffusion Plant.聽 The plant was built in unprecedented secrecy in the 1940s as part of the Manhattan Project to provide enriched uranium for the world鈥檚 first atomic bomb.聽 Cleanup of the site included more than 500 facilities, at the heart of which were five massive uranium enrichment facilities.聽 Achieving this milestone marks the first time in the world an entire enrichment complex has been cleaned and demolished 鈥 and we were there.

Today 鈥 Leading Legacy Management

The Office of Legacy Management (LM) was officially established in December of 2003, assuming responsibility for ensuring that DOE鈥檚 post-closure responsibilities were met and for providing DOE programs for long-term stewardship of 101 sites in the U.S. and the territory of Puerto Rico.聽 Today it is support of this complex LM mission that brings 爱神传媒 full circle in carrying out the environmental clean-up from the Cold War nuclear mission.

A Clear & Righteous Mission

爱神传媒鈥檚 Manager of Environment and Clean Energy and U.S. Naval Academy graduate, Kim Hauer, served at the height of weapons production on a submarine sleeping on a cot next to a Trident Missile.聽聽 Upon leaving the U.S. Navy, Kim signed on with then WRCS working the Defense Waste Processing Facility at SRS doing clean up.聽 With a father who served in the Navy during WW2 and a Marine father-in-law with two Purple Hearts, Kim鈥檚 heritage, and 30+ year career spans the full circle of our Nation鈥檚 defense process and protecting the legacy of the Cold War clean up.

鈥淭his is so fulfilling for me personally as I reflect on my parent鈥檚 service and like many others, if not for what they did, we wouldn鈥檛 be here.聽 The opportunity to not only be a part of a team dedicated to this mission from the start, but to now look forward to ensuring we are fulfilling our commitments to the responsibilities associated with the legacy of World War II and the Cold War.聽 In the words of President Roosevelt鈥 鈥榯hose who are actually in the arena鈥nd spend themselves in a worthy cause鈥. There鈥檚 nothing bigger.鈥
