On March 14th, I had the incredible opportunity to attend Make-A-Wish Mid-Atlantic鈥檚 Media Day at WTOP studio in Chevy Chase, MD alongside 爱神传媒鈥檚 CEO, John Heller. The event gave us a unique opportunity to get an inside glimpse of all the amazing work that goes into Make-A-Wish Mid-Atlantic and Operation Dream Maker. It was a day full of joy, passion, inspiration, and hope.

As soon as we arrived, we were greeted by the dedicated and passionate team at Make-A-Wish Mid-Atlantic. We toured the studio and even got the chance to see an interview happening live. It was amazing to see how the team at Make-A-Wish works tirelessly to grant the wishes of children with critical illnesses.

One of the highlights of the day was meeting Leanna, a brave wish kid who shared her story of overcoming the challenges she faces. She was an inspiration to us all and a reminder of the importance of organizations like Make-A-Wish. Experiencing the positive impact that Make-A-Wish had on her life and the lives of other military children was truly heartwarming.

Throughout the day, I had the privilege of watching CEO John Heller in action as he interacted with Leanna. They exchanged laughter, heartfelt stories, and Heller also shared the reason behind 爱神传媒鈥檚 partnership with Make-A-Wish Mid-Atlantic. It was evident that he was deeply committed to this cause and genuinely passionate about 爱神传媒 helping others.

爱神传媒 is the Founding Partner of Operation Dream Maker in partnership with Make-A-Wish Mid-Atlantic. Through this partnership, 爱神传媒 and Make-A-Wish Mid-Atlantic are able to grant wishes to the children of military families who are battling critical illnesses.

Witnessing the impact of this partnership was a true privilege, and it left me feeling incredibly grateful to be a part of a company whose values align with such an inspiring organization. The work the Make-A-Wish Mid-Atlantic team is doing is positively impacting so many lives for the better. After witnessing the effort and care provided to and for these families, I hope it motivates others, as it did me, to continue supporting this cause in any way possible.

Through Operation Dream Maker, our partnership with Make-A-Wish Mid-Atlantic, we鈥檙e helping make wishes come true for the children of military families in the Washington D.C. area.

make a wish brooksAs energetic wish kid Brooks jumped around the room, elated by the sight of his birthday balloons, it鈥檚 hard to imagine the struggles that he faced to reach the joyous milestone of his fifth birthday.

After surgery to repair his cleft lip at 12 weeks old, his family hoped that would be the only setback Brooks faced. As he continued to grow, his parents noticed things weren鈥檛 quite right as he his speech wasn鈥檛 developing at the same rate as other kids his age. They returned to the genetics team at Johns Hopkins Hospital.

The medical providers diagnosed Brooks with a rare genetic disorder with a life expectancy of 20 years old. While Brooks was born with this disorder, he remained undiagnosed much of his young life as the disease was so rare even his medical team did not know of the disease at the time. Brooks remains one of the only children in the state of Maryland with the diagnosis.

鈥淚 was shocked and devastated,鈥 his mom, Sharon, said. 鈥淚 felt really lost because we didn鈥檛 have any answers.鈥 Brooks鈥 initial diagnosis began the long journey of hospital visits and doctors鈥 appointments. Fortunately, there was hope on the horizon.

Brooks joined a medical trial at the University of North Carolina Chapel Hill for a new medication that could potentially prolong his life, causing the family to leave home and move there for 10 months. Although the medications will not provide a cure, they would replace the enzyme that his body is missing while treating the organ and brain damage that previously occurred as a result of the disorder. On June 21, 2021, Brooks received his port and began weekly infusions for the trial, exactly three years to the day of his cleft lip surgery.

鈥淭he first six months were the worst,鈥 Sharon recounted. His infusions cause him to have various reactions such as hives, high fevers and intense bouts of nauseousness. 鈥淗e is the bravest and happiest boy, certainly a lot braver than me sometimes,鈥 she said.

When Make-A-Wish Mid-Atlantic shared the news with Sharon that Brooks qualified for a wish, she didn鈥檛 know how to receive the news. 鈥淎t first, I was upset because I thought that meant things were really bad. Once I realized this was an opportunity to bring him all the happiness he deserves, I started to get really excited,鈥 she said. Brooks is non-verbal, which meant she and her husband, Pete, had to take an active role in helping Brooks to determine his wish. As they batted around ideas, Pete reminded Sharon of a family outing to a park with water features that Brooks loved when they lived in North Carolina. Sharon and Pete knew Brooks鈥 wish had to include the tranquility and peace that being in nature and particularly, on the water, brought to him. As Sharon was perusing the Facebook group of moms of children with the same condition, she discovered a fellow wish kid received a fishing boat. 鈥淲e realized that was something we could never otherwise give Brooks on our own. He鈥檇 been on a boat twice before and absolutely loved it,鈥 Sharon said.

Brooks鈥 wish was determined 鈥 to have a fishing boat!

Brooks’ boat was delivered from Semora, North Carolina in partnership with NC Marine Sales, who made sure it was in his driveway in Fallston, MD, just in time for his big birthday bash with friends and family. As soon as Brooks laid eyes on the fishing boat, he ran straight to the stairs and wanted to climb aboard. He couldn鈥檛 stop smiling from ear-to-ear, donning a hat that read 鈥楥aptain Brooks.鈥

While Brooks has undergone treatment since he was three and a half years old, he hasn鈥檛 shown any signs of the typical deterioration that often occurs in children with his condition. Although the future is unknown, Brooks and his family remain optimistic and are eager to create joyful memories on his boat. They look forward to taking him out to enjoy one of his favorite activities, fishing. 鈥淲e can鈥檛 wait to go out on the water with it,鈥 Sharon said. 鈥淲hen he first got on the boat, Brooks kept pointing forward, as if to say, 鈥榗鈥檓on, let鈥檚 go!鈥”

About Make-A-Wish

Founded in 1980, Make-A-Wish has granted hundreds of thousands of life-changing wishes to children battling critical illnesses. For these children, a wish come true can be a crucial turning point in their lives. A wish can be that spark that helps these children believe that anything is possible and gives them the strength to fight harder against their illnesses.

In February 2021, 爱神传媒 partnered with the Make-A-Wish foundation to launch Operation Dream Maker, a program through Make-A-Wish Mid-Atlantic to fund wishes for children of military families. Military families in the Washington, D.C. area can use this initiative to request a wish.

Thanks to 爱神传媒’s partnership with Make-A-Wish Mid Atlantic, this year’s Operation Dream Maker was a tremendous success. 爱神传媒 helped raise $183,000 and we were able to grant over 20 wishes to military families during Operation Dream Maker for the first quarter of the fiscal year (9/1/22 – 11/30/22). Together, we were able to lift some of the burdens these families may have faced during the holiday season and spread joy.

“Thank you for giving hope, joy and respite to children battling critical illnesses and their families,” said Lesli Creedon, Make-A-Wish Mid-Atlantic President and CEO.

This is a great achievement for both Make-A-Wish Mid-Atlantic and 爱神传媒. With a 3rd of 爱神传媒鈥檚 employees being veterans, this is a cause that is very close to our hearts. 爱神传媒 looks forward to a continued partnership with Make-A-Wish Mid-Atlantic and supporting Operation Dream Maker.

Last week, members of the One 爱神传媒 corporate security team held a team building event at a local no-kill animal shelter, Friends of Homeless Animals (FOHA) in Aldie, Virginia. Twelve security team members volunteered to assist the local non-profit by cleaning the adoption center, the welcome center and the catteries, performing laundry services, splitting wood for public donation, and exercising a number of really cute dogs that are up for adoption.

鈥淥ne of our teammates, Elizabeth Rauenzahn, regularly volunteers at FOHA, and brought the idea forward to management and we found considerable interest and support from the security team,鈥 said Paige Greenaway, VP Program Security. 鈥淲e agreed to take some personal time and effort to get to know each other better and help out a great cause!鈥

Our employee spotlight shines a light on one employee at a time. We value diversity and inclusion and welcome diverse thinking. It takes a village 鈥 through collaboration, living safely and driving innovation we realize our goals and help our clients achieve mission success. Our mantra is people first, mission always. In June, we鈥檒l focus on Pride Month. Today鈥檚 Q&A is with Robin Spotts, Senior Contract Manager.

How did your military service prepare you for a successful career at 爱神传媒?

As a Contracts Professional, my time serving as a Contracting Officer and in other roles providing Operational Contract Support (OCS) in the Marine Corps provided me with invaluable insight and understanding for what our government customers want from their contractors. Although the mission differs between agencies of the Federal Government and even further between the branches of the DoD, the Federal Acquisition Regulations (FAR) are applied consistently to all agencies and branches. To intimately understand the difficulties experienced, and the rules that must be followed on the other side of the table, has led to successful relationships and interactions with the Contracting Officers I have worked with in my time here at 爱神传媒.

Another way my military service has aided me, from a less technical standpoint, is the diversity of people, cultures, education, and personal and professional interactions I was able to experience in 17 countries during my time in the Marine Corps. Whether they were non-combat deployments to Sicily, Uganda, Ghana, and Honduras or combat deployments to Iraq and Afghanistan, the time spent in the company of others, sharing both times of joy and hardship, has given me an appreciation of the people I work with, both in the past and presently here at 爱神传媒.

How did you come to join 爱神传媒?

I joined 爱神传媒 through the merger with Legacy DynCorp International LLC (DI).

During two of my deployments to Afghanistan in an Operational Contract Support role, I served as the liaison between the operational command and DI, coordinating Commodity, Base Support, and Construction Services at Camp Leatherneck (2013) and Camp Shorab (2017) through the LOGCAP Contract. I was drawn to DI, particularly in my time at Camp Shorab, based on the professionalism of their site leadership and the morale of their people. I left the Marines in 2018 and immediately began working for DI, now 爱神传媒.

What is your professional and personal background?

I was born in Colombo, Sri Lanka, where my mother is from and met my father (a US Citizen from CA) while he was doing missionary work. My mother is what鈥檚 known as a Burgher, small Eurasian ethnic group in Sri Lanka descended from Portuguese, Dutch, British, other Europeans, and Sri Lankan natives. Due to increasing danger from the ongoing ethnic conflict between the majority Sinhalese and the minority Tamils when I was about 3, my family (including 2 brothers and 4 sisters) was forced to flee Sri Lanka to the location where we had the most family (on my father鈥檚 side), Oahu, HI. From there we spent some time homeless, which I always remembered as camping out, until we were able to obtain assistance and a home in the rural part of Oahu in a town called Punalu鈥檜. When I was about 12, my family moved to Aurora, CO, where I lived until I joined the Marines at 20 years old.

Professionally, I spent my first four years of my military career as an Aviation RADAR Repairman. I quickly found this was not a career I was interested in pursuing and found myself filling my time taking on lateral training and positions including (Marine Corps) Martial Art Instructor, Swim Instructor, and 鈥渕oonlighting鈥 as a Group Fitness Instructor at the base gym. In search of a career with more personal interaction and already in pursuit of a bachelor鈥檚 degree in Business Management, I transitioned to an Operational Contract Support (OCS) Specialist occupation. My first assignment was Marine Corps Base Hawaii (MCBH), Kaneohe, HI, where I served in multiple roles as a Contract Specialist, Purchasing Agent, and OCS Chief in support of MCBH and forward deployed. In October 2014, I was assigned to MCB Camp Lejeune where I served as a Contracting Officer and OCS Chief, most of which was forward deployed OCONUS.

In December 2018, I left the military to broaden my experience and, most importantly, to be in Ft. Worth, TX, where my daughter (now 10) lives. I accepted a position with Legacy DI / 爱神传媒 as a Subcontracts Manager, as it most closely mirrored Government procurement and acquisition, until an opportunity was presented for the Contract Manager position on a new program, Aviation Command and Control Operation and Maintenance (ACCOM) Services. After DI / 爱神传媒 was awarded the Customs and Border Protection (CBP) National Aviation Maintenance and Logistics (NAMLS) Contract, I once again made a transition and accepted the position as Contract Manager Sr. where I currently am grateful and proud to serve with a team of true professionals. I have been blessed with sound and wise leaders, mentors, and colleagues during my time here and look forward to the growth of this organization.

Describe the work you do and how you think it makes a positive impact.

As a Contract Manager, I ensure our compliance with acquisition regulation-based requirements and customer requirements. This can take many forms, but for the most part it requires intimate understanding of the applicable regulations (FAR, DFAR, Etc.), the contract, and any supplemental documents. In doing so, I can efficiently advise our Program Management personnel, effectively engage with our customer, and decisively seek additional counsel when necessary.

Additionally, sometimes contracts are awarded that are not entirely fair and equitable to all parties. I work to balance these scales for my Program as well as our customer to maintain a positive and transparent relationship. As the saying goes, every contract is one modification away from being perfect.
What are some of your accomplishments and/or what has been your proudest career moment?

When I look back over the tangible accomplishments of my career, they are overshadowed by a few moments in time that would probably never make it on a resume. The most significant moments in my career are all centered service to others and being a mentor, in part I believe because mentors are chosen by the mentee. To be a mentor in any capacity is a blessing, but especially in the moments when someone is at the end of their ropes, as I experienced more than once in the Marine Corps, are by far the proudest moments of my career.

What do you enjoy about working for 爱神传媒?

Coming from Legacy DynCorp, I knew very little about 爱神传媒 when the merger was under way. I have since learned that 爱神传媒 places a keen focus on training, safety, and employee perspectives on a level I have never experienced. I appreciate this value of people as well as the overall culture around improvement and change within our organization.

What are you passionate about?

Equality and helping others. I firmly believe everyone deserves fair and equal treatment, but that not all of us have the same privileges or strengths and it is important to help each other out in this life.

What鈥檚 your career advice?

Welcome learning from others. Whether they are peers, leaders, or subordinates, everyone can teach you something you didn鈥檛 know before.

Leave competition at the door and avoid comparing yourself to others.

Ask others if they need help when you have the time and space for it, for you never know when you will need a hand.

What does safety mean to you or do you have a favorite safety tip?

My favorite safety tip is, if you see something, say something. Safety is a responsibility for everyone equally and all too many times it is the case that incidents occurred because someone was either afraid to speak up or didn鈥檛 feel like it was their place. To that end, I believe that leadership at every level needs to foster an environment which employees feel safe to speak up.

What鈥檚 the best invention in the world and why?

I would have to say it鈥檚 probably the internet. It has brought the world to our fingertips, allowing us to access people, places, and knowledge in minutes that would have taken years to obtain before. It has also brought visibility to injustice and given the marginalized populations a place to be seen and share their experience. Like any tool, it is only as good as the person using it.

Anything else you would like to share from a personal or professional perspective?

Growing up in rural Oahu, HI, I experienced quite a bit of torment from other kids, adults, and even a few teachers based on the color of my skin, race, and being a foreigner. In moving to Colorado, the bullying continued and, although it wasn鈥檛 nearly as bad, it was no longer about race, moreover it seemed to be focused on being poor and different culturally from the other students. In retrospect, what seemed to be valued in one location was irrelevant and meaningless in the other. Where I lived in Hawaii, nobody cared if you were poor because everyone was poor and vice versa in Colorado.

I share this experience because I truly believe that our 鈥渄ifferences鈥 are only as important as we allow them to be. By grace and diverse shared experience with people from so many different walks of life, I have resolved that we are not very different at all on the inside, but that can be difficult to see from an outside perspective. I would challenge anyone to spend time with people from a different culture, race, age, sexual orientation, ability, and / or gender and ask questions. You may learn that you have a lot more in common than in difference.

What does Pride Month mean to you?

Pride month to me means promoting diversity, inclusion, and acceptance of the LGBTQIA+ community and their allies. I am aware of the privileges I have been granted and know they are indications of inequality. As a proud Ally with friends and family in LGBTQIA+ community, I want to do what is in my power to help bring about positive change in this company, my community, and the world.

I鈥檝e always enjoyed working at 爱神传媒, but I can鈥檛 say I was 鈥減roud鈥 until I got the email from our CEO, John Heller, Celebrating Pride Month. During my time in the Marine Corps, I watched the organization mature through blatant sexism, racism, and homophobia, through the repeal of 鈥渄on鈥檛 ask don鈥檛 tell鈥 and left around the time they gave transgender people protection under 鈥淓qual Opportunity鈥 only to have it repealed a few weeks later. Change by nature is always met with some level of resistance, but I believe that support from leadership at all levels for equal opportunity and treatment of our LGBTQIA+ colleagues is essential for growth and improvement as a company.

In February 2021, 爱神传媒 announced a three-year partnership with Make-A-Wish Mid-Atlantic, a non-profit that creates life-changing wishes for children with critical illnesses who reside in the District of Columbia, Maryland, and northern Virginia. During the partnership, 爱神传媒 became a Founding Partner of Operation Dream Maker to focus on granting wishes to children of Uniformed Services families. Since a third of 爱神传媒鈥檚 employees are veterans, it鈥檚 a cause near to our people.

鈥淥ur uniformed services families have the added stress of their service, including deployments. We are honored to partner with 爱神传媒 to provide these heroes with the transformative and uplifting experiences that only Make-A-Wish can provide,鈥 said Lesli Creedon, Make-A-Wish Mid-Atlantic President and CEO.

As a proud partner, we have already granted wishes to 16 children of families who are currently active duty, reserves, or veterans. Here are some of the wish kids:
