Employee Spotlight: Meet David Anderson

David Anderson

Our employee spotlight shines a light on one employee at a time. We value diversity and inclusion and welcome diverse thinking. It takes a village — through collaboration, living safely and driving innovation we realize our goals and help our clients achieve mission success. Our mantra is people first, mission always. In February, we’ll focus on Black History Month (BHM). The next spotlight is this Q&A with David Anderson, HR Generalist, Aviation SBU.

How did you come to join °®Éñ´«Ã½?
Through the transition of DynCorp International.

What is your professional and personal background?
I started my career in HR 20+ years ago with a company called Conway (XPO now) and worked my way up to manager of human resources for the U.S. and Canada. When we relocated back to Corpus Christi I served as the human resources manager for the City of Corpus Christi, then the Salvation Army and now here with °®Éñ´«Ã½. I am finishing my degree in HR from Western Governors University.

I have three adult children, all of whom have served in the armed forces with my oldest son still serving in the Army, stationed in Korea. I have four grandchildren and three guitars. I have played guitar for about 20 years, everything from rock, blues, country and gospel. I love fishing and living in Corpus Christi offers some of the best locations, especially the beach.

How did your military service prepare you for a successful career at °®Éñ´«Ã½?
Serving in the military and around the world taught me how to stay composed in stressful situations and how to work as part of a team. It made me realize that I am accountable for myself and others who depend on me to do my part. It taught me to always strive to be my best in everything I do. I learned how to work with people of all nationalities and races. People with different opinions and life experiences and how to navigate through those circles and have some open and understanding conversations. Plus, it taught me the 4 C’s of the Army – courage, competence, commitment and candor.

Describe the work you do and how you think it makes a positive impact.
In human resources I work around the clock to support a site of 537 employees on three shifts. By adopting an open-door policy and being approachable and available, I have a steady stream of traffic to my office, email and phone…the employees know I am always available and the management knows I will provide good HR counsel.
What are some of your accomplishments and/or what has been your proudest career moment?
I helped form and manage the site’s COVID response team, made up of both management and CBA, to address employee safety and concerns about the pandemic. I have so many proud moments but what I enjoy best is helping employees resolve their questions and concerns each day.

What do you enjoy about working for °®Éñ´«Ã½?
I like that the company emphasizes the safety of its employees. Safety has always been a core principle of mine because I want employees to leave work the same way they came in – healthy.

What are you passionate about?
As a combat veteran I am passionate about our veterans, past, present and future. I try to work with groups that do outreach to homeless veterans and those in need.

What’s your career advice?
Surround yourself with people who inspire and challenge you.

What does safety mean to you, or do you have a favorite safety tip?
Safety is everyone’s responsibility. We should hold ourselves and each other accountable for working safe and do not allow shortcuts or impatience to interfere with our everyday work.

What’s the best invention in the world and why?
Music…when done right, it can soothe the soul.

What does Black History Month mean to David Anderson?
It’s a time to reflect on all aspects of Black history. It’s important to understand the not- so-pleasant parts of the past so we do not repeat that behavior and it’s equally important to reflect on the positive contributions of Blacks throughout history to recognize our potential.

Anything else you would like to share from a personal or professional perspective?
Yes, I have had some great mentors throughout my career and here at °®Éñ´«Ã½. I try to stay humble and keep learning every day.
